You run the danger of peeling off a few superficial nail cells during removal (known as onycholysis). According to New York City-based dermatologist Dr Dana Stern, when those patches — known as keratin granulations — break off, they can leave you with an "uneven, discoloured, and peeling nail that is why, before applying the nail adhesive, you must apply a protective coat to the nail, such as a base coat or another polish.
