Migraine relief with dietary omega-3 fatty acids
Increased consumption of the omega-3 fatty acids EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) and DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) found in fatty fish such as salmon, herring, sardines, mackerel, and trout may help those with chronic migraines.
On average, 182 individuals had 16 headache days per month, with attacks lasting more than five hours, according to a clinical trial published in the July 3, 2021, issue of the British Medical Journal.
A total of three diets were tested on the participants, each of which had high levels of EPA and DHA (1.5 grams total per day) derived from fish, as well as high levels of linoleic acid (an omega-6 fatty acid found in corn and soybean oils and some nuts and seeds). Another diet featured high quantities of EPA and DHA but low levels of linoleic acid. The third was a diet that was high in linoleic acid but low in EPA and DHA (only 150 mg total per day), which is similar to the normal American diet.
People who ate meals high in EPA and DHA had 30 percent to 40 percent fewer headache days per month and headache hours per day after 16 weeks than those who ate diets deficient in this omega-3s.
