4 tips for preventing tension headaches

You've probably encountered tension headaches, which are frequently referred to as stress headaches, at some point in your life. It's the annoying sense of mild to severe pain around your forehead, on the back of your head, or in your neck that can last anywhere from 30 minutes to a few days! This is a widespread condition, as approximately 80% of adults suffer from tension headaches, and women are twice as prone as men to do so. The good news is that you can prevent them by taking several precautions! The following are the top four tips for preventing tension headaches:

Reduce your level of stress.

By reducing the amount of stress in your life, you'll be less likely to suffer from tension headaches! Stressful responsibilities, such as work, raising children, and schoolwork, can be difficult or impossible to avoid in your daily life. Relaxation activities like meditation or a therapeutic massage can be helpful. Make it a point to spend some time each day doing something you enjoy!

Make Sure You Get a Restful Night's Sleep.

Getting a good night's sleep reduces your risk of developing a tension headache because it makes it easier to deal with the stresses of daily life. Even though there is no one-size-fits-all amount of sleep needed for a good night's rest, most adults should get between seven and nine hours of sleep each night. Adults 65 and older should get between seven and eight hours of sleep each night.


Stay Hydrated.

Staying hydrated is the best way to avoid a tension headache! Even if you don't feel thirsty, you should still drink a few glasses of water each day.  To avoid dehydration, avoid drinks that contain alcohol or caffeine. Fruits and vegetables, which are naturally high in water, can also be a good source of hydration.

Exercising regularly.

At least 30 minutes of moderate exercise five days a week can help prevent tension headaches. Exercise is a great way to relieve stress and stay in shape at the same time! To prevent tension headaches, yoga is one of the best exercises. You can also do light cardio on a treadmill or just walk around your neighborhood. Stretching, especially the jaw, neck, and shoulders, can also be beneficial, as these areas typically hold a lot of tension. Keep in mind that if you plan to exercise more than usual, you should begin increasing your fluid intake the day prior.
