When Hate Enters the NICU: Breaking the Bones of Black Infants

It is appalling, infuriating, and beyond disgusting to hear about acts of cruelty like those committed at the Henrico Doctors’ Hospital NICU. How can anyone look at a newborn—fragile, innocent, and utterly dependent—and cause deliberate harm? And for what reason? The thought is chilling. These are infants we’re talking about—babies. The very notion that someone in a position of trust, like a nurse, could be so depraved is both heartbreaking and infuriating.

For those who do not know, the NICU, or Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, is a specialized area in a hospital dedicated to caring for newborn babies who require extra medical attention.

Erin Elizabeth Ann Strotman, a nurse arrested for allegedly causing fractures and injuries to NICU babies, has shaken me to my core. The fact that this is even a possibility shows the depth of the systemic rot within certain parts of the healthcare system. And yes, I’m going to say it—there’s a racial element here that we cannot ignore. When I hear stories like this, I cannot help but wonder about the role that racism plays. Racism isn’t just hateful words or discriminatory policies; it’s baked into the very fabric of systems that allow individuals to harm the most vulnerable without facing immediate accountability.

There’s a long history here. My grandmother always said that racism hasn’t decreased—it’s just that laws make it harder to act on openly. But give a white person the opportunity, and their true colors will show. Stories like this are a haunting reminder of that truth. If a white nurse can allegedly harm Black newborns, targeting them deliberately, what does that say about the depths of her cruelty? About the system that enabled her? About the unchecked biases that fester behind the smiles of people claiming, "I have Black friends"?

Let me be clear: having friends of another race doesn’t absolve anyone of prejudice. True decency is not about performing kindness; it’s about seeing every person as fully human, equal in worth and dignity. And when stories like this surface, it becomes clear that many people still fail this basic test of humanity.

It’s also important to note that this isn’t an isolated incident—it’s part of a larger pattern. The health system, like the police force, is supposed to protect and serve. Yet, we see time and time again how some individuals within these systems weaponize their positions against Black people. Babies in a NICU! Could there be a more vulnerable group? And what does it say about a society where such an atrocity can occur, not once, but repeatedly?

The hospital’s actions also warrant scrutiny. Why were incidents in 2023 not a wake-up call? Why did it take this long for action to be taken? Suspending NICU admissions now feels like damage control rather than genuine concern for justice or accountability.

Some people might dismiss my anger as overblown or unnecessary, but let me ask you this: How do you expect a country built on the backs of enslaved people—founded on systemic oppression and exploitation—to simply “get over” its deeply ingrained racism? That’s as naïve as thinking a lion will stop eating meat. Racism is embedded in the DNA of the system, passed down like a twisted inheritance.

And don’t tell me every crime like this is about mental health. That’s a lazy excuse used to shield people from the accountability they deserve. Until we start recognizing racism as the sickness it truly is—a deep, festering mental and moral corruption—we’ll continue to see these horrifying acts. It’s not just hatred; it’s a depravity so extreme that it allows someone to look at a child and see a target instead of a baby.

To my Black brothers and sisters: stay vigilant. Trust is earned, not freely given, especially in a world that has shown us time and time again how little our lives are valued. This isn’t paranoia—it’s survival. Never let your guard down, not around your children, not around anyone.

And to those who will read this and dismiss it as “just another story,” remember: the harm done to one of us eventually poisons all of us. The same wickedness that allows someone to harm Black newborns will seep into every crevice of society. This hatred, unchecked, will eat itself when it runs out of targets.

We need systemic change, accountability, and a collective reckoning with the truth. No more excuses. No more “mental health” scapegoats. Call it what it is: racism, hatred, and evil.

  11. It’s absolutely heartbreaking and enraging to hear about something so cruel and unimaginable. The thought that someone in a trusted position could harm the most vulnerable—newborns—is beyond comprehension. This case is a stark reminder of how much work is needed to ensure accountability, ethics, and humanity within the healthcare system.

I also agree that we cannot overlook the role of systemic racism here. The idea that Black babies might have been deliberately targeted speaks to the ongoing and pervasive nature of racial bias, even in spaces that are meant to provide care and protection. It’s devastating and unacceptable.

I hope this case is handled with the utmost seriousness and that justice is served for the families involved. Beyond that, we need to demand systemic changes to ensure nothing like this ever happens again. This is a moment for all of us to demand transparency, accountability, and real reform.

  17. Pure evil. I do believe there is racism in certain areas of our country that is generational. I don’t believe it is in our DNA - however I do believe it is systemic and when you live in an area that has always been racist behind closed doors - they hear it, laugh at the jokes etc. Just like anti-semitism. Sadly it is alive and well.
We live in a fallen world - I know that might sound like a Pat statement from a Christian but it’s true. We know that this act of evil from this woman, grieves our Heavenly Father. We will see the continued depravity of mankind as we progress to the end but the good news is those evil doers will pay a price far worse that what our human government could ever do.
My heart goes out to the families and those precious babies. I pray that God will comfort the parents, restore the physical health of the infants and swift justice for the families. I also hope that hospital has a complete overhaul from top to bottom. Somehow this woman slipped through the cracks, and others were complacent which is just as evil.

I hadn’t heard of this and thank you for alerting us to this horrible crime.

    P.S.
Melody, I agree with you that not every such crime is about mental health!!!! This is a lie!!!
Unfortunately, but this lie is used at every turn, in Poland there is no shortage of this too!!!! My friend, I will write you one example. In Poland for more than 30 years every year in January there is a big charity action . I'm talking about the charity action that takes place in many countries in the world too, in countries where Poles live. It's a fundraiser to help hospitals, sick children and the elderly. A few years ago a popular politician was killed. He was stabbed near the heart during the finale of the campaign, there was a quick operation, but the man died. What is interesting - the politician who was killed was from the opposition at the time, his operation was carried out by the then Minister of Health, he is one of the best cardiac surgeons in Poland. Everyone in Poland knew that the motive of the assassin was politics - he was declared a mentally ill person!

Sadly, forms of modern slavery still exist in many parts of the world, often under the guise of forced labor, human trafficking, or exploitation. Governments and systems that allow these practices while claiming to uphold freedom are deeply hypocritical. The fight for true freedom and equality requires global awareness, accountability, and strong action against these injustices.

  22. "If a white nurse can allegedly harm Black newborns, targeting them deliberately, what does that say about the depths of her cruelty? About the system that enabled her? About the unchecked biases that fester behind the smiles of people claiming, "I have Black friends"?"

There is still so much racism in our world. It is sickening. It is hard to believe that there are people on this planet harming others based on their skin colour. Not being racist isn't enough to combat this issue, though. White people (including myself, obviously) must listen, learn, and speak out. It isn't enough to not be racist. We need to break down barriers wherever possible and highlight non-white voices. Over the last couple of years, I have been really trying to read more and be open to acknowledging my own blind spots.

"It’s also important to note that this isn’t an isolated incident—it’s part of a larger pattern. The health system, like the police force, is supposed to protect and serve. You are completely right. Systems that have power in society (police, hospitals, and so on) have a duty to protect all. Unfortunately, there are countless examples of that not happening. There is an enormous amount of racism that impacts the kind of care that people of colour receive in hospitals and similar settings. It's wrong and it needs to change immediately.

"Some people might dismiss my anger as overblown or unnecessary, but let me ask you this: How do you expect a country built on the backs of enslaved people—founded on systemic oppression and exploitation—to simply “get over” its deeply ingrained racism?"

The investigation began last year, and the initial focus was on Black infants being harmed. It does feel like this could be an attempt at damage control by the hospital, trying to shift the narrative.

Whatever their reasons might be, the fact remains that this tragedy should never have happened in the first place. The focus now must be on ensuring accountability and implementing systemic changes to prevent such atrocities from happening again. Thank you for bringing up such a critical point.

  46. I am speechless! I don't want to imagine how an adult can intentionally harm a child! My soul hurts just reading!

Unfortunately, you are right: without the law many individuals would reveal their true nature...

It is beyond my power to understand why some people need laws to force them to be human...

I wish you all the best!

    Beijinhos!

  48. It is truly terrible when something like this happens. A lot of times, the hospital will blame it on the parents. There is neglect in much of our communities with those of special needs and the old. However, it is horrific when hospitals are creating those to have special needs. Thanks for the write up.

    1. The issue becomes even more tragic when hospitals, which are meant to provide care, contribute to harm instead. It’s so important to raise awareness about these situations to ensure accountability and better treatment for everyone in society.

Tudo isto me deixa muito triste.
Abraço e bom fim de semana.
