Our pre-Valentine visit to Pitlochry

If there’s one thing I love, it’s the countryside. I know it’s not for everyone, but for me, there’s nothing better than being surrounded by nature. The peace, the open space, and the freedom of living away from the constant noise—it just feels right. I dream of a life in my own little big town, tucked away from the world, with a farm, a horse stable, cows, goats, elephants—yes, elephants—and all the joys of country farm life.

So, when we visited Pitlochry as part of our pre-Valentine's adventure, I was excited. The drive there was just as enjoyable as exploring the city itself. Pitlochry has its fair share of attractions, but what truly captured my heart was the quiet, the vast green landscapes, and, of course, the animals. It felt like a perfect escape.

Pitlochry is a charming town located in Perthshire, Scotland.

First Stop: Pitlochry Kinnaird

Our journey began at Kinnaird, a charming village in Perthshire, Scotland, known for its deep history and breathtaking scenery. The name “Kinnaird” comes from the Scottish Gaelic words ceann ard, meaning "high headland"—which makes sense once you see the views.

One of its gems is the 15th-century Kinnaird Castle, a four-story stronghold once home to the Threiplands of Fingask, a Jacobite family. It was impossible not to stop and take countless photos—the landscape was like something out of a postcard. The fresh air, the rolling hills, and the sense of history all made for a moment worth capturing.

Second Stop: Pitlochry Moulin

Not too far from Kinnaird, we arrived at Moulin, where we made sure to snap a picture with the famous signpost that welcomes visitors with a burst of flowers. Pitlochry is known for its Pitlochry in Bloom initiative, and you can tell they take pride in their floral displays. Every corner felt like a painting, with colors that popped against the green countryside.

Final Stop: Pitlochry Pitagowan

A little drive took us beyond Pitlochry to Pitagowan, where we wrapped up our day by walking around and taking in even more of the town’s beauty.

We parked (for free, which is always a win!) and wandered into a whisky shop that exclusively featured Scottish brands. And let me tell you, this wasn’t your average collection. We’re talking whisky at all levels—from affordable to luxury, with bottles costing more than most people’s cars! One of the staff members told us about a whisky they used to have that was worth £30,000. I also learned something new—once whisky leaves its barrel, it stops appreciating in value, whereas wine keeps going up as the years pass. Definitely an interesting fact!

From there, we explored the Clan Donnachaidh Museum, which is right off the A9 in Bruar. It’s a small but fascinating spot dedicated to the history and heritage of the Donnachaidh clan. The museum sits next to one of Scotland’s most well-known shopping destinations—The House of Bruar—which, let me tell you, is the place for high-quality Scottish country clothing. Everything there is handpicked, with an emphasis on craftsmanship and tradition.

By the time we left, we had soaked in so much of Pitlochry’s charm—its history, landscapes, local craftsmanship, and, of course, that peaceful countryside feel I love so much.

Top Places to Visit in Pitlochry, Scotland

We recently enjoyed the scenic drive through Pitlochry rather than stopping at attractions—but if you’re visiting, here are top places to explore:

1. Outdoor Beauty & Adventures
  • Ben Vrackie—A rewarding hike with panoramic views.
  • Queen’s View—A stunning Loch Tummel viewpoint.
  • River Tummel—Great for walks or white-water rafting.
2. Pitlochry Dam & Fish Ladder

A unique hydroelectric dam where you can watch salmon leap upstream in spring and autumn.

3. Blair Castle

A 700-year-old fortress with grand interiors and beautiful gardens.

4. Edradour Distillery

Scotland’s smallest traditional distillery, offering rich single malts and tours.

5. The Enchanted Forest & Highland Games

The Enchanted Forest—A dazzling autumn light and sound show.
Highland Games—Experience traditional Scottish sports and music.

6. House of Bruar

Luxury shopping for Scottish cashmere, tweed, gourmet food, and whisky.

7. Loch Faskally

A tranquil spot for fishing, boating, or a scenic picnic.

Pitlochry has something for everyone—maybe we’ll return in summer to see it all!

Scotland, you never disappoint when it comes to travel.

  8. Interesting, informative too. I enjoyed this outing to Scottish countryside. Landscapes look quiet and serene. Your own little big town? Frankly, I never thought of it. I'd probably enjoy living in my own house. And I'd like to visit whisky museum. What do you mean by Whisky stops appreciating its value after leaving the barrel? It loses quality? Or gets cheaper?

    ReplyDelete

    1. Serene is the word. I enjoyed my time. About owning my little big town, that is a dream I have and I can't wait for that dream to manifest. When people say, "Whisky stops appreciating in value after leaving the barrel," they mean that the aging process ceases once the whisky is bottled. Unlike wine, which can mature and develop new flavors in the bottle, whisky only ages while it's in the barrel. The price of bottled whisky can still increase due to rarity, demand, or branding. However, the whisky itself does not become better over time—its market value may change, but its intrinsic quality stays the same.

  9. First of all, I want a bottle of a fine old Scotch Whiskey, my dear! Oh yes, I want.
By the way, now, this trip was really magic, Melody. I love the highlands in Scotland and your guide was absolutely full of details and excellent photos.
I prefer life in such places, my friend instead of the toxic cities. But, unfortunately it's just a dream.
Thank you, Melody for this trip. Kisses my dear.

I saw and read your post with great interest. Beautiful photos and captivating views!
You wrote that you dream of living in the countryside. I live a small city - about 11.5 thousand inhabitants. In my municipality there are about 21 thousand people. There are moments in my life that I'm happy that I live in my small city, but I sometimes wish to live in a large city, where tourists from the world come, is a city with many monuments, cultural sites, entertainment.
    Melody, I salute you!
