What is cinnamon?

Cinnamon is a popular household spice that has been used for millennia throughout the world. This spice, which was once traded as currency, has a pleasant flavor and a toasty aroma that makes it popular in cookery, particularly in baking and curries.

The spice is obtained by extracting the inner bark of a tiny evergreen tree. The bark is peeled and then dried in the sun, where it curls into cinnamon sticks. Additionally, cinnamon is available in powdered form.

Cinnamon is extracted from the Cinnamomum verum (or Cinnamomum zeylanicum) tree's bark. This bark includes a number of unique compounds that contribute to its numerous health benefits, including cinnamaldehyde, cinnamic acid, and cinnamate.

Types of cinnamon

Ceylon cinnamon, which comes from the Cinnamomum Zeylanicum plant in Sri Lanka, is the most common variety.

The other predominant variety is Cassia cinnamon, which has a stronger flavor and is slightly more affordable.

To maximize cinnamon's medicinal value and health benefits, regardless of its type, the critical factor is its freshness.

While some prefer the delicate sweetness of Ceylon cinnamon in desserts and the stronger flavor of Cassia cinnamon in savory dishes, the majority of commercial cinnamon is a blend of the two.

Cinnamon: How to store and use it

Cinnamon should be stored in an airtight container in a cool, dry location. Whole cinnamon lasts about a year, but ground cinnamon begins to lose flavor after a few months. It's worth checking the use-by dates on cinnamon in your cupboards, as the fresher it is, the better.

Big emotions can be frightening. Anxiety, sadness, anger, and a variety of other strong emotions can quickly activate the fight-or-flight response in the body. That is true for adults, but it is especially true for children who are still discovering their emotions and learning to manage them. Now that school has resumed, there may be spillovers of strong emotions at school and home. While each situation, family, and child is unique, the following are a few evidence-based tips for parents to assist children and adolescents in navigating significant emotions.

Discuss your emotions.

To begin, it's beneficial to remember that emotions are natural. We all experience them, from pleasant to stressful. Children benefit from parents discussing emotions because it helps normalize feelings and teaches them that it is acceptable to discuss them with you. Additionally, regular conversations aid in the development of children's emotional competence and self-regulation abilities. This can be as simple as labelling your own emotions as they arise, associating emotional labels with specific physical cues, and discussing potential coping strategies. For instance, you could inform your child, "When I'm worried, I notice that my muscles and voice tremble. I've discovered that practising paced breathing and engaging in a grounding activity helps me feel better. Are you interested in practising with me?"

Try grounding.

Children and parents can experiment with a variety of coping strategies to assist in managing difficult emotions. Paced breathing and progressive muscle relaxation are two techniques that can be beneficial for calming the fight-or-flight response that may occur in response to strong emotions.

At times, emotions are irrational and extremely difficult to manage. Grounding is an effective tool for assisting children in remaining focused on the present moment and creating some distance from distressing thoughts during these times. Physical grounding strategies entail focusing on one's senses or surroundings, such as on the sensation of their breath during a breathing exercise or the soles of their feet while walking. Another popular option is "5-4-3-2-1," in which you list five visible objects, four tactile objects, three audible objects, two odour objects, and one taste object. Alternatively, you could assign a colour to each digit.

Fashion is ever-changing; what is fashionable one season is frequently out of date the next. This year alone, we've seen the rise of cottagecore, the demise of our once-adored stilettos, and a complete embrace of ugly shoes (are you a Crocs or a Uggs fan?). However, one constant thread that runs through all of our fashion choices is, and always will be, the trusty boot.

Each autumn and winter, it appears as though we all become positively giddy at the prospect of donning our best boots, both old and new. And the runways appear to have taken note, as there was no shortage of boot options on display during the Fall/Winter 2021 shows. From classic combat boots to the resurgence of '80s platforms, we've compiled a list of the season's best boot trends. What's the best part? Many of them will also seamlessly integrate into your spring and summer 2022 wardrobes (we see you, Cuban heel boots). Take advantage of them now before the rest of the fashion world does the same.
An abdominal aortic aneurysm is a condition in which the aorta swells abnormally. Smaller aneurysms are rarely a source of concern. However, they can enlarge over time, increasing the risk of rupture. This is potentially fatal.

The aorta is the largest artery in the body. It transports oxygen-rich blood from the heart to the body's smaller arteries.

An abdominal aneurysm occurs when a section of the abdominal aorta ruptures. The section of the aorta between the bottom of the chest and the pelvis is referred to as the ascending aorta.

The aorta is typically about an inch (2.5 centimeters) in diameter.  The  size gradually increases as people age. When the abdominal aorta balloons swelling is greater than 3 centimeters in diameter, this is referred to as an abdominal aortic aneurysm. The most common symptom of an abdominal aortic aneurysm is a balloon-like swelling. The aorta's wall bulges out.

The majority of aortic aneurysms are caused by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a condition in which fatty deposits accumulate on the inside walls of blood vessels.

Symptoms

The majority of aortic aneurysms are asymptomatic. They are frequently detected during routine physical examinations. Alternatively, they are discovered during routine X-rays for unrelated illnesses.

When symptoms manifest, they may include the following:

Individuals in pain:
Abdomen
Pain
Between the bottom of the ribs and the hips, the fleshy part of the sides
A sensation of fullness following a small meal
Vomiting and nausea
A pulsating mass in the abdomen

Floating blood clots form infrequently near the aneurysm. These clots may disintegrate. They can also obstruct blood vessels in other parts of the body.

Occasionally, an abdominal aneurysm that has not been discovered ruptures without warning. The patient collapses and dies as a result of massive abdominal bleeding.

Diagnosis

Your doctor will inquire about any family history of heart disease in your family. He or she will be interested in learning about any unexpected and possibly unexplained deaths in the family.

Your doctor will ask a few questions about whether you smoke. The doctor will perform tests to determine if you have high cholesterol, high blood pressure, or diabetes.

Based on the physical examination, your doctor may suspect an aortic aneurysm. Your physician may detect abnormal blood flow in your abdomen. Alternatively, your physician may notice and feel a pulsating mass in your abdomen.

In the majority of cases, an abdominal aortic aneurysm is discovered during an imaging study for another illness. Numerous imaging studies can detect aortic aneurysms. X-rays and ultrasound are examples of these.

Ultrasound is an extremely accurate method of detecting abdominal aortic aneurysms. Additionally, the patient is not exposed to radiation.

Once an abdominal aortic aneurysm forms, it is permanent. Most increase in size over time.

Abdominal adhesions are fibrous scar tissue bands that form on the abdomen's organs. They can cause organs to stick together or to the abdominal wall.

Surgery is the most common cause of abdominal adhesions. The surgical team's abdominal organs are temporarily displaced from their regular places. This can cause excessive scar tissue growth in some persons.

Peritonitis, an infection that has spread to the membrane that protects the abdominal organs, can also cause adhesions. Endometriosis is another rare cause. Tissue that normally lines just the uterus begins to grow in other regions of the body, including the abdomen.

Adhesions do not create health problems in the majority of patients. However, in a tiny percentage of persons with adhesions, the fibrous bands of scar tissue totally or partially block the intestines. A bowel obstruction is a medical term for this type of blockage.

Adhesion-affected areas of the gut might get clogged and unblocked repeatedly, causing symptoms to come and go.
